How it all started!
Bec’s story
From an early age I had always been drawn to the mystery and excitement of treasure hunting. I particularly enjoyed that old movie “The Goonies”, where a group of kids discover an old Spanish map that leads them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willie, a legendary 17th-century pirate.
Many years passed and my dreams of treasure hunting remained just that, dreams, until I came across a website with stories about people finding coins and relics with metal detectors. I was fascinated; I read how someone had found a number of pre-decimal coins in their local park.
So with that I started looking up anything and everything I could on metal detecting, I must have spent hours searching through information and reading personal accounts of detecting finds from people all over the world. Before too much longer I purchased my first metal detector and I was out searching for treasure whenever I got the chance, beaches, parks and sporting ovals.
After about 6 months of coin and relic hunting and some interesting finds, I started doing research on ‘Gold Prospecting’. This seemed to me to be the ultimate challenge, to find a nugget of any size in the vast Australian bush.
So I ended up booking into a weekend with Gold Prospecting Australia and off to the golden triangle in Victoria I was. Half way through day one I came across my first gold nugget, you should have seen the look on my face, I was beaming. I was in awe at nature and I was left pretty speechless. I had been definitely bitten by the “Gold Bug”. What an amazing experience and to find a gold nugget and to be able to spend time in the great Aussie outdoors. Mark, Rhonda and Beth from Gold Prospecting Australia were just fantastic, as a beginner I learnt how to use the Minelab GPX5000 metal detector and some fantastic tips to help me in my search for that elusive yellow metal.
Now some years later, I have journeyed numerous times to Victoria, Western Australia and even my local parks to try and find gold and treasure. I love metal detecting and I enjoy the thrill of the chase. I also love learning about the history and geology of different parts of Australia, meeting some great people in the detecting world and experiencing the wonderful great outdoors.
